Fur Trade Relics
circa 1600 to 1850
The Beaver was one of the most contributing factors to the
Fur Trade era in North America. Europe was in high demand
of quality fur pelts. These pelts were used in the manufacture of
quality fur hats of the day. Depleted fur numbers in Europe led
to the trade of abundant pelts abroad. The French Era 1600 to
1760, British Era 1760 to 1816 & the American Era 1816 to 1850
established trading posts throughout North America. 250 years
of bartering was the way of commerce which included fine crafted
silver, beads, jewelry, wool blankets, knives, traps, guns & anything
that could be of trade value.
The lack of furs by 1840, fashionable silk hats & new laws spelled
the decline of the industry. The days of high Fur Trade were about
over by 1850.
